Music & Choirs

For more information on joining any of our choirs or musical ensembles, please contact Director of Music Nick Palmer.

St. Cecilia Choir
The St. Cecilia Choir is the adult choir of the church which leads worship at the 10:00 a.m. service September through May. There are approximately 15 singers on the roll who rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. for 90 minutes. The choir sings traditional music that is often accompanied by organ but also with handbells and our brass ensemble. The choir reaches out to the community at Christmas by caroling at various retirement facilities.

St. John’s Consort of Instruments
St. John’s Consort of Instruments comprises members of the church and occasionally others as needed. We invite woodwind, brass, and string players to join in our worship as soloists or as part of small ensembles.. The group is coordinated by Nick Palmer and leads worship by providing service music, accompanying hymns, and other musical offerings.

St. John’s Recorder Ensemble
Our recorder ensemble includes sopranino through bass instruments, rehearses weekly, before the choral rehearsal, and plays every four to six weeks for liturgy.

St. John’s Bell Choir
St. John’s owns two octaves of bells and handchimes.  We are currently looking for a director of the bell ensemble.  Typically, the ensemble rehearses weekly and plays monthly at the liturgy.

St. John’s Canterbury Choir
The Canterbury Choir is a children’s choir for those of reading age and older.  It meets weekly and sings for liturgy every four to six weeks, sometimes alone and sometimes in conjunction with the St. Cecilia Choir.  Laura Janik Lopez is the director and welcomes new singers in the Fall and in the early Winter. More information can be found here.

St. John’s “Sing-in” Messiah
Every year, St. John’s hosts a 90-minute performance of Handel’s Messiah, featuring a chamber ensemble of players, soloists, and a choir of 25-30 singers plus the audience.  We rehearse the choruses weekly on Wednesdays and Sundays in the season of Lent and then perform the Sunday after Easter.

St. Benedict’s Ensemble
This small ensemble is focused on leading the sung prayers of the church. Most significantly, they lead Compline by Candlelight every single Sunday during Lent, at 8:30pm. They also assist in the singing of the liturgy for special services.
