Environmental Action Team

The St. John's Episcopal Church Environmental Action Team (EAT) began the Good News Garden (GNG) Pilot Program in partnership with the Dioceses of Eastern and Western Michigan, facilitated by staff from the Plainsong Farm Ministry. Plainsong Farm staff provided 25 Episcopal churches with starter seedlings, seeds, weekly garden education to start and maintain a vegetable garden, and weekly theological reflections.

Since its inception in 2020, the GNG has grown from being a pilot program to now extending into Phase II in development to include additional raised beds and fruit trees thanks to the wonderful donors in our community. In addition to providing fresh produce for local use, the program provides a deeply spiritual component -- to grow stronger relationships with God, our neighbors, and one another as disciples of Jesus.

The GNG helps aid in addressing food insecurity by offering healthy on-site sourcing of vegetables, leafy greens, berries/fruit, and herbs for our Loving Spoonfuls and Food Pantry ministries; bringing parish youth, individuals and families into learning about our earth, water, and natural environment; and providing opportunities to develop stronger relationships with God, our neighbors, and one another.

The GNG is an extension of our St. John’s Episcopal commitment to Care for God’s Creation. If you or your family would like to lend a hand or donate to the GNG Ministry, please contact the parish office for more information.

May the God of Hope fill us with all joy and
peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit.
